At age 13, JoJo became the youngest solo artist to have a number one single in America. Nine years later, she has a new sound and a new look. We chatted with the songstess to get the deets on the release of her mixtape Agape, her life-changing relationship, and her beauty secrets.
Real Beauty:Did you pull inspiration from real-life experience for the song "André?"
JoJo: Yeah, it actually comes from a very honest place. It's about a guy who changed my whole view on how a relationship could and should be: something positive, inspiring, uplifting, and good for you. Honestly, I hadn't been in the most positive relationships until this one came along. It showed me that it doesn't need to be darkit can be a beautiful thing. Love is real.
RB: How did you translate that idea into the video?
JJ: I wanted something more fun, light, and colorful than I had done in the past. I wanted you to feel the energy, the happiness. I wanted it to feel wishfully in love. Ambrio, the director, helped me to bring that to life.
RB: What made you decide to release your music for free online? Is it a sneak peek for an upcoming album?
JJ: For a few years, I haven't been able to release music for my label. In the mean time, to keep my sanity and my creative juices flowing, I decided to release my music for my supporters that have been waiting so patiently. I just did it for the love of singing and because I will go crazy if I'm not doing it.
RB: Since you've been in the industry, have you picked up and beauty secrets or tricks?
JJ: I always use a primer before my foundation. I really love Georgio Armani Fluid Master Primerit makes a big difference in how natural a foundation sits on your skin. Also, I am a big believer in curling your lashesit opens your eyes and makes them pop.
RB: Are there any beauty trends you would never try?
JJ: I'm pretty game to try new things. I love to get in the chair and say 'Do whatever you want!'
RB: Is there a look that you're are dying to try out?
JJ: I really want to play with my freckles more, especially in the summer.
RB: How would you describe your personal style?
JJ: Eclectic. I love to incorporate great vintage pieces that I've found over the years with some high-end and low-end stuff. I love hats as well, I think they really make an outfit. I like to dress to express.
RB: Do you have any tips or tricks that help you to stay healthy?
JJ: Alkaline water is really great for your digestion, your overall health, and for neutralizing the acidity in your body. I've also been really loving hot yoga, it's really centering. It's great not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually too. It's the perfect time to release anything that has been going on in your life. I also believe in drinking green juices and eating cleanit makes my skin glow.
