Grooming Tips for Men: Manscaping

Asking for advice on grooming (or actually doing it) is one thing most men will never do. (Admitting they're excited to see the new Sex and the City movie is a close second.) We asked skin therapist Caesar Jimenez from GROOM to cover the tough "manscaping" questions our guys want to know but are too afraid to ask.

Should guys "manscape" and which areas should they groom?

YES! Take it from us women, guys should groom all over — especially down there. Caesar Jimenez, Licensed Skin Therapist at GROOM in San Francisco, recommends focusing on the chest, torso, and genital areas when cleaning up excess hair. Manscaping involves waxing, shaving, and/or trimming body hair. "I use clipper guards, which trim overgrowth by cutting hair the same length, giving body hair a more natural, cleaner look compared to overly groomed body hair," says Jimenez.

Should guys tweeze or wax their eyebrows?

"Men should wax their eyebrows only if it's absolutely necessary," says Jimenez. Since wax removes all the hair at the root, it creates perfect lines on brows, which results in a feminine look. Tweezing between brows and trimming strays will achieve a subtle, more natural look. Jimenez recommends the eyebrow trifecta when cleaning up stay hairs: trim long hairs, wax (if you have a uni-brow), and tweeze strays.

Is manscaping appropriate for all skin types?

"It's appropriate for all skin types, but you should make sure the skin is prepped properly," suggests Jimenez. He preps skin by applying jasmine-infused oil to dry/sensitive skin to hydrate it, and a light dusting of cornstarch to oily skin.

Is there any prepping that needs to be done before grooming?

Since men have coarser hair, it's a good idea to soften it by applying a hot towel over the face for several minutes, or taking a shower before shaving. You don't want to stay in the shower too long, though, because the skin can swell, making it harder to achieve a closer shave. With waxing, you don't need to soften the hair, but oftentimes the hair is trimmed down some before treatment.

Should men wax or shave their body hair?

Waxing can be a necessity, especially for men with excessive back or shoulder hair. Waxing is more precise than shaving, and it lasts longer (four to six weeks), since hair is removed at the root, compared to shaving, where the hair is cut at skin level and will reappear in less than three weeks. Additionally, all men should at least trim their pubic hair. [Editor's tip: The more hair, the smaller it looks!]

Should men moisturize as part of their daily grooming routine?

Men should definitely moisturize, especially if shaving is done daily. Gel or light cream moisturizers with at least an SPF of 15 are best.

Which products are essential to include in a shaving kit?

Essentials include: a sharp razor, like the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Manual Razor; exfoliating scrub; shave cream or gel, like the Gillette Series Pure & Sensitive Shave Gel; nonscented aftershave lotion or hydrating gel; and moisturizer with sunscreen of SPF 15-30. Men can also raid their wives' or girlfriends' bathrooms and use their products with antioxidants. Look for products with these ingredients: vitamins C and E, L-lactic acid, as well as antiaging ingredients like resveratrol and L-retinol, and sunscreens with titanium or zinc oxide.
