How to Glow Like a Celeb at the Emmys

9/1/2010 1:10:00 PM by Andrea Lavinthal

Many dermatologists say that they treat celebrities, but thanks to that pesky doctor/patient confidentiality law, they don't have to back up their star-studded claims with actual names. However, there are a few derms who are known in the beauty industry for having a client list that reads like a who's who in Hollywood, and Dr. Jessica P. Wu, a dermatologist in Los Angeles, is one of them. For the month leading up to the Emmys, Dr. Wu was working seven days a week on many of the famous faces you saw on the red carpet, including a slew of nominees. And while she won't tell us who did what to prep for the cameras (trust us, we begged), she was willing to share the same advice she gives to her celeb clients during awards season. Here are Dr. Wu's tips for looking glowy — no appointment, chemical peel, or laser treatment necessary.

• Exfoliate once or twice a week with a gentle scrub like Philosophy The Microdelivery Mini Peel Pads for face and Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish for body.
• Hydrate at night with a moisturizer that contains skin-plumping hyaluronic acid like Nude Skincare Moisture Balance.
• Brush a shimmer powder over the apples of your cheeks. Wu likes the best-selling Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick, which comes in several shades.
• Use a body bronzer on shoulders, arms, and legs. Wu recommends Scott Barnes Body Bling.

Paris Hilton's Picture-Perfect Mug Shot

9/1/2010 11:25:00 AM by Colleen Moody

paris hilton

I bet you thought I forgot all about Paris Hilton's mug shot this weekend with the influx of Emmy goodness that we've been dealing with, didn't you? Worry not, a beauty editor never forgets. The moment I heard about Paris Hilton getting arrested (again), my immediate thought was what the mug shot would look like.

Now, let's clarify. I don't condone any celebrity behavior that ends up in the pound, but this shot is proof that Paris has had some practice when it comes to perfecting her jail pose. Mug shots give everyone a disadvantage, with the horrible lighting, the dead-on angle that doesn't accentuate your features, and the fact that most of them are taken past 3 a.m. when your makeup is dripping off your face and your hair is a ratty mess. But Paris has defied the laws of every one of these hurdles, because this is probably the best mug someone could ever take.

Her hair is flawless in adorable side braids (thanks to an afternoon of pampering at Michael Boychuck's COLOR Salon at Caesar's Palace prior to her cuffing), her makeup hasn't smudged a bit, and she's even found her flattering angle! That takes some serious posing talent.

We learned from Cosmo's photo director, Jennifer Miller, in our Ultimate Photo Challenge, the biggest no-no when it comes to taking a picture. "Never stand fully facing the camera," she told us. Instead, it's best to turn your body three quarters to make yourself look thinner and more natural. For this we must say: Bravo on your posing perfection, Paris.

Check out how to get your own version of the side braid below, perfect for a night not spent behind bars.

Emmy Roundup: Get the Look and Other Backstage Tips

8/30/2010 1:40:00 PM by Colleen Moody

jenna fischer

Last night's Emmy Awards brought a barrel of fresh hair and makeup looks, and we found it fabulous that many an actress stepped away from her staple looks (like Kim Kardashian's mega waves) and went for something different to spice up the red carpet. We've gathered some of the best tidbits from backstage last night so you can get your favorite small screen star's look.

Jenna Fischer's Effortless Waves:

TRESemmé celeb stylist Mara Roszak styled Fischer's loose waves. She started by parting hair slightly off-center when the hair was damp and applying TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Root Boosting Spray to roots and brushing through. Next, she applied a dime-sized amount of TRESemmé Fresh Start No-Frizz Creme to the ends, and blow-dried hair smooth with a medium-sized round brush. Once it was dry, she created natural-looking waves with a 1 1/4-inch barrel curling iron rotating the direction of the iron, leaving the ends of the hair out. Last, she broke up the waves with her fingers, and finished with TRESemmé Naturals Finishing Spray.

Anna Paquin's Vamp Updo:

On wet hair, Renato Campora applied Fekkai Full Blown Volume Styling Whip to the roots and Fekkai Coiff Perfecteur Anti-Frizz Silkening Crème. Once it had dried, he used a half-inch curling iron and set the hair in pin curls. After 15 minutes, Campora removed the curls and ran his fingers through the hair to loosen and create shape. Next, he pulled the hair back into a high French twist, revealing the nape of her neck, and secured it with bobby pins. To create volume, Campora loosened the hair at the crown of her head, resulting in a softer, yet glamorous style. He finished the look with Fekkai Advanced Sheer Hold Hairspray.

January Jones's Frosty Makeup:

"For January's makeup I was inspired by Irving Penn's iconic photos of his wife/supermodel Lisa Fonssagrives, whose signature extended eyeliner symbolizes the epitome of elegance," said Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. "I used ultra-feminine colors with super-sculptural liner for a cool update on that classic late '50s silhouette. I used CHANEL Liquid Eyeliner in Noir along the lash line for an exaggerated cat-eye effect, adding extra lashes on just the very outer edges for added length. I then applied two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir on the top lashes and one coat of CHANEL Inimitable Intense Mascara in Purple on the bottom lashes. The rest of the face I kept understated, using minimal foundation, pale pink cream cheek color and CHANEL Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Confidence on her lips. I finished the look by dusting her brow bone and lids with a loose iridescent pearl shadow with a hint of purple to play off the super-reflective quality of her dress."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Shiny, Straight Strands:

Oscar Blandi gave Dreyfus this sleek, polished look by spraying her roots with Oscar Blandi Volume Volumizing Spray and a touch of Oscar Blandi Pronto Gloss throughout the hair to prevent frizz. After drying hair with a round brush, he added a small amount of Oscar Blandi Jasmine Oil Serum and gently ran a flatiron through the hair, keeping it one inch from the roots and leaving the ends softly bent to keep hair looking natural. Last, he took the front section of the hair from the sides and tucked it behind the ears, securing it with a pin to keep the hair in place and finishing it off with Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray for additional volume and flexible hold.

Rose Byrne's Red Carpet Prep:

John Frieda celeb stylist Harry Josh handled Byrne's tresses for the red carpet, but the work started well before backstage. He prescribed a pre-awards-show routine to keep her hair looking fabulous for the red carpet: John Frieda Root Awakening Health Infusing Shampoo & Conditioner.

The Hairspray Everyone Loves...

...was L'Oréal Elnett Satin Hairspray! Stars from Vampire Diaries's Nina Dobrev to Julie Benz and Heather MacDonald all fessed up to being co-dependent on the long-lasting formula.

Beauty Risk: Your Makeup Might Kill You

8/27/2010 10:00:00 AM by Colleen Moody

lipstick

The average woman uses 12 personal care products per day, and the average man, six. While this may surprise you that your guy actually owns six beauty products, what is even more surprising are the number of chemicals that are in your favorite products.

According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Act, the average beauty product has 12 or more ingredients in it, and they most likely aren't all listed on the product label. What is even more nerve-wracking is that only 20 percent of the ingredients cosmetic companies use have actually been inspected for safety.

That's why the Safe Cosmetics Act is fighting to get (believe it or not) more government control when it comes to scanning cosmetics to make sure they contain safe and healthy products. There are currently no laws that control what toxins can go into our staple products and to date, the FDA has only banned eight out of 12,000 ingredients that could be possibly used — even though some of these harmful ingredients have been linked to cancer, fertility problems, and other serious health issues.

What the Safe Cosmetics Act is promoting is a movement of green chemistry, which is increasing in popularity. Green chemistry involves a group of chemists whose primary purpose is to tweak the ingredients companies use in products to make them safe for us to use. The campaign believes that if they can get the government to take more precaution with what they allow huge cosmetic corporations to use, along with the movement of green makeup, we won't have to sacrifice our to-die-for products or the amazing results it gives us. No sacrifices on our part? We're all for that.

What do you think about the campaign? Do you ever worry about chemicals in your cosmetics?
