I got to head backstage of the VPL show (I just missed the rain!) to find out the inspirations and tricks of the trade from the hair and makeup team.

After arriving just in the nick of time, I grabbed some (free!) water gratefully and talked to Bob Recine about his vision for the hairstyle. Each model featured a fishtail braid, a style that I personally love but do not understand how to accomplish. The fishtail is meant to embrace the geometric style of VPL clothing, but perfection isn’t necessary. The imperfections are welcome to give extra charm. If you, like me, are going to try a fishtail out now, hairspray is the essential product to accomplish the edgy braid.

For makeup, each model wore a streak of silver across their eyelid. Makeup artist, Romy Soleimani’s look was a throwback to the 90s (remember all that shimmery silver and gold Britney used to rock?) as well as a "spring into darkness" vibe. The streak of silver allows for some spontaneity in contrast with the stricter geometric idea.

Personally, this intense hair and makeup is a little out of my league but I still picked up some key tips on how to manage every day beauty. One product everyone should have is eye dew. It's a quick way to wake yourself up if you're lagging in the middle of the day. Another investment is a handy eyelash curler! It'll open up your eyes effortlessly. As for hair advice, Recine had one word: Confidence. So, if you're wearing a frizzy, messy, pony-tail (such as mine), then just be sure of yourself!
