5 Summer Skin Protection Tips
Say so long to winter hibernation and hello to sunshine and sunscreen. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. To make sure we're staying safe, VMV Hypoallergenics schooled us on how to better protect our summer skin:
Start Fresh: Toss sunscreen products that are more than 24 months old, or that look or smells funky.
Use the right amount: SPF testing is done with 2 mg of product per square centimeter of skin. Thats about a shot glass-full of sunscreen for the body—about 2/3 a teaspoon just for the face and neck. In reality, most people use only 20-50 percent of this quantity when applying sunscreen. If you know youve a light hand, use a higher SPF to counteract.
Be thorough: Even if you use waterproof sunscreen, still reapply every two hours or after swimming. Just do it.
Dont forget your lips, scalp and ears: These are three commonly overlooked areas that definitely need SPF care!
Go faux: Use a self-tanner instead of indoor tanning booths, which have a proven link to skin cancer.
