Backstage at NYFW: A Day-to-Night Look at Derek Lam
Derek Lam knows that women don't always have time to change their outfits and makeup between work and nights out. With that in mind, Tom Pecheux at Estée Lauder created a look that could be layered rather than removed.
Pecheux based the models' looks off the dresses in the collection. "They are extremely sophisticated, but in a very American casual way," he explained. "I wanted something to be minimal, but still a little bit, 'Let's be pretentious!'" Pecheux started with a simple, bare face and focused on the eyes, with dark shadows that could be layered more heavily in the evening. To keep the look from being overwhelming, Pecheux went with just a swipe of mascara on the upper lashes. The result? "Something simple, but something very powerful," Pecheux says. We're inclined to agree!
