Mom Gives Her 8-Year-Old Daughter Botox for Beauty Pageants
Well this gives the term "Baby Botox" a whole new meaning.
According to this article in the San Francisco Chronicle, Kerry Campbell, a 34-year-old British import, routinely gives her elementary-school-aged daughter, Britney, Botox and bikini waxes to ensure her star power now and later on in life. Campbell explained to the Chronicle that such practices are customary on the pageant circuit and that she tries all of the injectibles (which she purchases online) on herself first to ensure their safety.
We're not ones to point fingers here, but this is... extreme. So, we asked Dr. Joel Schlessinger, an Omaha-based cosmetic surgeon (his day spa LovelySkin is one of the best beauty spots in the Midwest) to comment on the matter. "This is a story that makes every dermatologist cringe in disbelief," he says. "Doctors train for years to do things like inject Botox, but she is doing it freehand with bootlegged product, (Ed. Notethere's no way to verify the authenticity of Internet-bought Rx drugs) and it can take days to see infections or toxin-related illnesses from additives."
In addition to the possible physical effects her mom's illegal beauty practices could have on Britney (including permanent disfigurement), there are plenty of psychological ramifications. Campbell might try to claim that performing these procedures on her daughter now can only help her down the roadby delaying the first signs of wrinkles and preventing hair growth on her legs and genital area, but doctors disagree. "There's a reason that we don't do cosmetic procedures like this on minors and this story sums it all up and wraps it in a bow," adds Schlessinger. Tell us: what do you think?
