Neons & Neutrals with Mary Alice Stephenson

We chatted with fashionista and Rembrandt Style Ambassador Mary Alice Stephenson on what she can't wait to wear this spring the trends she's excited for this spring.
Real Beauty: What spring trends are you most excited about?
Mary Alice Stephenson: All the neon! People can get scared of it, but it's already hit the stores and it'll be everywhere. Even Mrs. Obama recently wore a neon orange Ann Taylor jacket! It's a style that'll really work with all the classics you already have in your closet. Buy it now and wear belted with opaque black tights and booties. When it warms up, the same piece will look incredible with cuffed khakis. It'll look fantastic with all of spring's neutral colors: khaki, black, denim, and white.
If you're a little scared, try a neon skinny belt, a great clutch, or wear it on your nails! It really adds personality to any outfit and makes a statement, which is what's so exciting about fashion. Now more than ever is a time to be boldbreak your own rules that are keeping you in a fashion rut. I'm really urging everyone to put a little neon in their life.
RB: But before we invest in all the highlighter shades, do you think it's sticking around or is it more of a passing fad?
MAS: The key is really just to buy something that you love and that speaks to you. You should never buy anything if you think you'll just wear it once and never again. I hear a lot of woman say that, but you shouldn't buy a thing if you think that way! If you're loving that neon clutch, and it talks to you, and you think it's amazing, have fun with it! If you truly love something, it can stay in your closet and be worn over and over again.
The real truth it that every trend comes back again. Maybe you'll just wear it for spring and next fallbecause it was all over those runways, tooand then you'll give it a rest and store it in your closet. The rule about throwing it away if you haven't worn it in a year? I don't live by those rules. I don't throw anything away!
RB: When you're shopping, what pieces are worth the splurge and what are some that you can find cheaply?
MAS: Pants with personality are big for spring and you can find them at a lot of affordable stores. There are lots in store right now and they were all over the runway again for next fall. A lot of women get nervous about printed pants because of their body shape, but you can always try the trend with a fun color, whether a pastel or vibrant red. It's like "preppy gone glam" whether green, red, blue, polka dot, or plaid. Stella McCartney did some Hawaiian-inspired prints, but you can also find them at most mass retailers, like Target, Talbot's, and Ann Taylor. You definitely don't need to spend lots of money.
And if you're going to spend money, you spend it on jewelry. I think jewelry adds soul to your style, and you can make anything more personal with it. The jewelry you wear instantly tells people who you are. A lot of women spend money on clothes, but jewelry lasts forever and is timeless. I love brands like Kara Ross, Erickson Beamon, Fenton and Miriam Haskell for great costume jewelry. Lia Sophia is priced really well. Delicate, small jewelry is sweet and beautiful, but if you're going to spend some money, go for a bold piece of statement jewelry that you really just love.
