Fresh Fishtail Braids at Mara Hoffman
Rounding out our favorite looks from swim week is the coolest interpretation of a French braid that we've seen in a long time.
As you all know, braids have been making a big comeback, from tiny boho plaits to Heidi-esque wrapped-around styles. At Mara Hoffman, TRESemmé lead stylist, Elsa Canedo, created this double fishtail look that incorporates two different types of braids for one fresh finish.
To get this look at home, spritz strands with TRESemmeé Thermal Creations Curl Activator Spray and use a 1" curling iron to create pin curls around the whole head. The end effect of the look is pretty mussed-up, so don't fret if your curls are a little on the sloppy side.
After the curls are all set, start taking them out (begin with the first curls you secured), and brush through each section gently with a paddle brush. Once all of the curls are brushed, flip your hair over and spritz dry shampoo over the under-side of your mane, using your fingers to move product through to the ends. This will add extra texture and hold that will help your braids stay in place later.
Now, it comes to the braiding part (which looks way more complicated than it actually is). Part your hair down the center and weave a traditional French braid on each side, setting the braids about two inches apart. Women with rounder faces may want to separate their braids more than this to soften stronger cheekbones and jawlines.
Once the hair has been braided to the base of the neck, switch to a fishtail braiding style to plait the rest of the hair. When done, secure ends with thin, clear elastics and use a pea-sized amount of smoothing cream to lightly rough up the hair around the face by back-combing and loosening a few pieces.
While the hair team at Mara Hoffman kept their braids pretty close together to create the illusion of one large plait, we also like the idea of separating the braids a bit more for relaxed weekend styles. If you want to also recreate the makeup look (probably sans tribal-inspired face paint), keep your face simple, add a touch of blush, and line brows and eyes with a kohl pencil to further define these features.
