Beauty Q&A with Kim Cattrall
When it comes to being a celebrity, having great skin is just as important as a stunning smile. So it was no surprise to us when Olay recently announced that Kim Cattrall, 54, is the celebrity face (or, body) of their Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash and Body Lotion. We sat down with the former Sex and the City star to find out more about her beauty routine and what she thinks women need to do to feel sexier in their own skin.
Tell us how your experience with Olay has been.
Kim Cattrall: It's been exciting! And it's not just the opportunity, but I love the products too. [Olay] was like, "Do you really like the formulas?" And I'm like, "Yes!" How can you beat seven anti-aging benefits in a product that's $8 and available everywhere? The body wash is great at hydrating my skin and keeps it looking fresh and young. As an actress I wear a lot of body makeup, and the formula cleans everything without making my skin dry or irritated. I used to spend tons of money on really expensive body creams and shower gels that would dry me out. I would scratch so much that I would break blood vessels. So it's really nice to have a product I can count on.
Being an actress can be a taxing job. How do you keep your skin looking radiant?
KC: When I'm on set, they don't have time to redo my makeup entirely, so I'll spritz myself with an Evian spray to wake me up and refresh my skin. Your skin needs a drink from time to time! Also, when I'm not working, I don't wear a ton of makeup. I just stick to SPF, lip gloss, and put on my sunglasses. I want my skin to have a day off, too.
How do you spend your days off?
KC: Sleep is very high on my list. I also love massages, baths, and just creating a spa in my home. It's a ritual that is part of my weekend regime. I usually decorate my space with lavender candles, ambient lighting, and beautiful flowers. When it comes to creating an at-home spa, atmosphere and aesthetic are very important to me. I love wrapping myself in a big luxurious bathrobe and climbing into bed to watch bad TV.
What do you think your best feature is?
KC: People tell me I have really great eyes. I'm very luckyI have long lashes, so a good eyelash curler is my best accessory. Since they have length, they also tend to have a mind of their own so keeping them in order is key. When it comes to mascara, I use everything from Maybelline, Dior, and Kevyn Aucoin. I have my dad's eyelashes. Men always seem to have the best lashes, don't they? Why do they need them?
Besides lathering up with a great body wash, what would be your best tip for women who want to feel sexy in their own skin?
KC: You need to be good to yourself. Women are really hard on themselves and tend to dwell on what wasn't as opposed to what is. We really need to celebrate our successes and give ourselves a pat on the back. Stand up for yourself and set boundaries so you can get a better sense of yourself. Overall, take time outs for yourself. Say congrats to yourself. Have a macaroon!
When do you feel the sexiest in your skin?
KC: I feel sexiest when I'm totally relaxed. There's no stress around, no duties to take care of, and it's total me time. It gives me a chance to disconnect from the world and reconnect with myself.
What's the best beauty tip you've ever received?
KC: To work with what you've got and know that what works for your friend might not work for you. For example, I have really sensitive skin with oily areas and dry areas. I know what works for me and what doesn't, and if I'm trying a new product, I won't wait around for it to kick in if it's irritating my skin. That especially goes for foundationI look for oil-free formulas because I tend to break out on my chin. In order to have great-looking skin or makeup, you need to look into what's in your products, and pay attention to how your body reacts to them.
