Completely Bare's Cindy Barshop's Tips to Dress Your Age

6/13/2011 11:29:00 AM by Colleen Moody

cindy barshop

If you've ever seen someone wearing something just a little too tight and a tad too short on your Sunday morning errands, you know that dressing for your body type and dressing for your age are two completely different things. Below, our celebrity guest blogger, Completely Bare owner (and star of Real Housewives of New York!) Cindy Barshop gives you her tips on how to avoid becoming that woman in the supermarket.

I used to think reaching a certain age meant editing my fashion-forward closet down to a few nondescript basics, but with each passing birthday I slowly learned that age-appropriate dressing isn't about the year you were born, it's about your attitude. Instead of creating a mental laundry list of off-limit items, consider your body type and personal style. If you're five foot and busty, maybe pass on the maxi dress trend and look for something that shows off your, ahem, assets. Ditto on the too-tight booty shorts that belong at the gym, not on the street (and that goes for all ages!). Your best bet: Clothes that show off your favorite feature. Love your arms? Stick to strappy tops. Got great legs? Rock a mini skirt. It's all about making the most of what you have and feeling confident.

Also take into account your lifestyle. I live downtown and prefer an edgy look—think leather accents and lots of black, whereas uptown girls tend to favor feminine details and pastel shades. Some items, however, belong in every girl's closet whether she's 18 or 40—like a great pair of nude pumps. They're leg-lengthening magic and match with every outfit.

As for hair, there's no rule that says you have to cut off long locks once you hit your 40s. Again, it's about flattering your face shape and working with your lifestyle. My shaggy locks are totally wash-and-go, perfect for my hectic lifestyle and suit my slim face. Keep in mind that just because your favorite actress looks gorgeous with a pixie, doesn't mean it's a good look for you. Creating an authentic, signature look is about staying true to yourself and feeling beautiful in your own skin.

Cindy Barshop is the expert on all things beauty. Since opening her national chain of spas, Completely Bare, she has been a media darling for all things lifestyle and especially hair removal. She's the go-to gal for info on how to stay gorgeous, a mom to two darling daughters, and the newest housewife on The Real Housewives of New York. Follow her on twitter @CindyBarshop.
