Beauty Q&A with Camelot's Dee Corcoran
With the sudden death of a king, a commoner rising to the throne, and a kingdom facing war and deception, times are certainly tough on Starz's new drama Camelot. Yet with all that stress going on, the characters have never looked so good. We sat down with lead hairstylist for the show Dee Corcoran to talk about how she channeled this dark era to the characters looks, and some styles that are even still around today.
Real Beauty: Tell us about the prep work to get ready to do the hair for this film? Did you have to buff up on your history a bit?
Dee Corcoran: Absolutely. The series is set in such a unique and distinct historical period so I had to do quite a bit of research on the hair of the era to be able to accurate depict it.
RB: How did you go about recreating the time period through these styles?
DC: Since there are no photographs available, I relied heavily on existing artwork from King Arthur's era to get the right kind of styles.
RB: Are there any hairstyles from that era that are still around today
DC: I think you will find there actually are a lot of "Camelotan" hairstyles that are contemporary and chic for both men and women today (take away the headband on the picture above and presto! Date night hair.)
RB: What products did you use to get the styles to stay put on set all day?
DC: We shot in Ireland, so as you can imagine with the cold and damp weather getting good hair can be quite a challenge. We made sure to use flexible styling products for the men and for the women we continually misted hairspray throughout the day (we like Suave Touchable Finish Lightweight Hold).
RB: What's one hair look you love from this era that you think we should bring back?
DC: I love the long, free-flowing styles that we used on set. I think it really brings out a women's sensuous side!
Camelot airs Friday nights on Starz at 10 p.m. ET/PT. For more information on the series, visit starz.com.
