5-Step Runway Looks: Tomboy Ponytails at BCBGMAXAZRIA

It seems like we just left Lincoln Center not too long ago for Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week Spring 2011. Now, we're back scoping out trends for Fall 2011 as we hustle back over to the tents in the sub-zero temperatures that are whipping through New York this week. But like fashion, beauty never sleeps, and neither do we. Stick with us as we give you the best hair and makeup trends from backstage and how you can recreate the look at home.
Bumble and Bumble lead stylist for BCBGMAXAZRIA Neil Moodie gave us the inside look at his interpretation of the "Tomboy ponytail." Since the fabrics for the show were especially heavy on the chiffon, Moodie said it was important to toughen up the models hair and makeup so she wouldn't come off as too ethereal. Thus, the Tomboy pony was created - a low ponytail in the back and a simple side part (inspired by beauty icon Twiggy) in the front. Check out how to get the look below.
Spritz Bumble and Bumble Prep and Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion on damp hair before blow-drying.
Dry hair using a large round boar bristle brush. Dry it as straight as possible but don't flat-iron after to give your ponytail some volume.
Part hair into a side part that isn't too severe. Your part should be center with your eye (whichever side you choose). See the picture below as an example.

Using a flat bristle brush pull hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Leave a small piece out from your ponytail to wrap around the elastic at the end.
Tie hair with an elastic (make sure it's not one with a metal end so it won't poke out from under the hair) and wrap hair around it, securing with a bobby pin. Top off with some shine spray.
