AXE Dark Temptation: The Sexy Scent Your Guy Should Be Wearing
File this under reasons why I love my job (and why you'll probably hate me from now on): I was recently flown to France by the amazing folks at Axe to learn how they create the scents for their wildly popular body sprays. Believe it or not, Axe uses two big-time fragrance houses (International Flavors & Fragrances and Firmenich) to come up with those delectable aromas that line the drugstore shelves. Along with a few lucky beauty editors, I was treated to a tour of those famous perfumeries and had the opportunity to spend time with world-renowned fragrance expert Ann Gottlieb, who is the mastermind (or should I say, "masternose") behind Calvin Klein Obsession, Daisy for Marc Jacobs, Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker, and many, many more. Basically, a beauty lover's dream come true.
In addition to learning a bunch of fascinating fragrance facts (e.g., perfumers at IFF's Perfumery School train for 5-7 years to perfect their sniffing skills), I grew very familiar with Axe's extensive body-spray collection and I was très impressed with the amount of research that goes into each fragrance. For example, Axe Twist was developed by Gottlieb (remember, she's the genius behind almost every major perfume out there) in conjunction with the perfumers at Firmenich (some of their hits include Chanel No 5, Angel, Happy, and J'Adore). They also enlisted the help of 20 college-age consumers, including guys and girls, to ensure that Twist was well received by the fairer sex. The result: a fresh citrus aroma with earthy notes of cedar and sandalwood that's perfect for the warmer months.
But the Axe scent that really gets me all hot and bothered (I'm actively searching for a suitor who wears it) is Axe Dark Temptation, which was inspired by the mouthwatering scent of chocolate. (You may remember the hilarious commercial where the chocolate man strolls around town while insatiable females bite off his various body parts.) Dark Temptation was also created by Gottlieb (who I joked should write a book called "I Scented Your Life") and smells as delicious as it sounds. More warm and spicy than sugary sweet, the aroma is surprisingly sophisticated and extremely seductive, thanks to a combo of amber, red peppercorn, and, of course, a touch of chocolate. And at $4.99 a bottle, you can afford to douse your man with it, because trust me, once you get a whiff of the addictive scent, you're not going to want him to wear anything else.
