The Gender-Bending Beauty Trend

Lady Gaga is such a follower. We kid, we kid. But most beauty insiders weren't that surprised by her drag-tastic performance at last night's VMA's. Why, you ask? Well, because gender-bending, Victor/ Victoria-style hair and makeup is in for fall.
From bold brows at Yves Saint Laurent to faux-sideburns at Dolce & Gabbana (seen here), the winter 2011 runways were filled with stark looks that ran the gamut from handsome to down-right manly. And, with the exception of mini-pompadours and penciled arches, these looks are not the easiest to pull off.
So, while Gaga succeeded at raising eyebrows (while opting not to pluck her own), most women might want to road-test subtler styles before suiting up. Use pomade to sculpt your next nape-of-neck bun. Or try a bronzer, instead of blush, to define chiseled cheekbones. And lastly, take your cues from Ms. Gaga's elaborate lesson: Femininity (and masculinity) is only as important as you make it out to be. So, have fun, and use your girly products to help channel all of your alter egos, even the androgynous ones.
