Julie Bresnick, Before

Julie's beauty stats: Fair skin; minor sun damage; makeup minimalist.

"I'm not a makeup person. It takes time, and it feels so heavy on my face. Plus, wearing it is a commitment, because on the days that you don't, people notice the difference. Now that I'm a new mom, I have even less time, but I still want to feel pretty and be sexy."

Clean up the brows

"By cleaning up Julie's brows, it will instantly brighten up her face," says Natalie DiStefano, makeup artist at The Rita Hazan Salon in NYC. "I like to tweeze and trim because waxing gets rid of those tiny fine hairs that will in turn make your brows float on your face." When trimming, comb the brow hair up and then down.

Choose a low maintenance eye color

Since we wanted our new mom to look as rested as possible, Natalie used a champagne liquid eye shadow that worked double duty in brightening the eye while minimizing any darkness from fatigue. "What's great about this liquid shadow is that it will last all day, so there's no retouching," says Natalie.

Fake wide-awake eyes

Next, Natalie curled Julie's lashes, an essential step for opening up the eyes. She worked a brown liner into the lash line and added a touch of highlighter to the inner corners of her eyes. She finished with a few coats of lightweight mascara. By holding the wand vertically, she was able to add a touch to Julie’s lower lashes.

Hide darkness and fatigue

Natalie brushed a highlighter that matched Julie's skin tone to function both as a concealer and a brightener under Julie's eyes, around her nose and on her chin,. She then combined two tinted moisturizers (one with SPF) to warm up Julie's skin and applied it all over, bringing the color down to her neck with a synthetic brush.

(Natalie used Jane Iredale Dream Tint with SPF on Julie).

Add a pop of color

Using a brush to apply, Natalie applied a cream blush to the apples of Julie's cheeks. "It looks more natural, like the color is really coming through the cheeks," says Natalie. "Plus, it's easy to put on and will last all day."

Finish with a low-key lip

To add some color to Julie's lips, Natalie used a pencil first and then swiped a baby pink gloss on top. (Natalie used Kevyn Aucoin Lip Gloss in Cloudaine). Gloss is easy to wear, and the light color is easier to remove than a lipstick.

Julie, After

"My favorite part is the lip-gloss shade — I love how natural it looks, but it still gives my lips a bit of a tint," beamed Julie. "It will be fun to surprise my husband, but I hope he doesn't expect this to be an everyday routine!"

Dr. Rolanda's Skin Tips for Julie

Sponsored Tip

"New Moms have good reason to smile! Julie probably has a smile on her face quite often. Since most women will experience wrinkles around the eyes, which are accentuated when we laugh or smile, it is important to take special care of this delicate area. I suggest that Julie treat the skin around her eyes, and protect against sagging that may occur to the upper eye area, with concentrated anti-aging treatment products that work to immediately reduce eye puffiness, and continue to fight the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Julie should also protect the rest of her glowing skin from signs of aging by ensuring she properly moisturizes and protects skin from UV damage by using broad spectrum SPF protection."
