Andrea Lavinthal Loves Jessica Alba's Smoky Eye
A smoky eye doesnt have to be a nighttime-only look. Use muted colors, like taupe and plum, to create a version thats appropriate for daylight hours.
If your eyelids are naturally dark and tend to get oily, start with a primer. I use Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($18; urbandecay.com) to prevent creasing and make the shadow last longer.
Pick up a shadow palette that has up to four shades. Look for one with soft, subtle hues like taupe, mauve, plum, and moss. I love Philosophy Windows to the Soul Eye Palette in Plum Delicious ($30; philosophy.com). Sweep the lightest color (it should be a cream or beige tone) from your lash line to brow bone.
Use a medium shadow brush to apply the second lightest shadow over your lids.
Use an angled shadow brush to apply a stronger color in your creases. This shading technique will create the illusion of bigger eyes.
Finish the look by lining your upper and lower lash lines with the darkest color in the palette. Smudge the line with your pinky finger or a clean cotton swab. Don't forget to curl your lashes and apply two coats of mascara.
