Ariana Finlayson Loves Jenna Ushkowitz's Smoky Eye
Since I felt that a black and silver smoky eye looked too intense and raccoon-like on me, I turned to purples instead. Theyre softer, but they still have great intensity, plus they make my brown eyes pop. Here are my tips for how I pull it off.
Two years ago I made the switch from pencil to gel liner and I haven't looked back. I love Shu Uemura Painting Liner because it stays where it needs to and provides a nice intense line in one stroke. With any art form, you need great tools and makeup is no exception. I use the Clinique Eye Definer Brush to apply. The trick to applying a gel liner is to dip just the angled tip in the product, then use short, small strokes. Once you have those down, go back over your lash line (as close to the waterline as you can) with more liner.
Smoky-eye palettes are the best because they come with the four shades that you need, which takes the guesswork out of finding hues in the same color family. MAC had this 4-shade limited-edition purple palette in their spring collection:
Black Tulip Frosted dark grape (Frost)
Bruised Plum Frosted mid-tone dirty mauve (Veluxe Pearl)
Jungle Moon Blackened deep eggplant (Matte)
Mink Pink Neutral soft pink (Veluxe) (Limited Edition)
I start by dusting Mink Pink over my eye up through the eye socket. Next, I dust Bruised Plum over just the lid, along the lash line. Since I'm not a fan of when Asian girls try to create the illusion of a double lid, I dip my brush into the darkest colors, Black Tulip and Jungle Moon, into just the outer corners. Lastly, I use my fingertip to smooth out the lines.
I'm in the process of using the lash-growth treatment Peter Thomas Roth's Lashes to Die For Platinum, and I swear my diligence is paying off and it's working! For lashes, I use a Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler and usually a variety of mascaras depending on how intense I want my eyes to look. Currently, I'm a huge fan of Maybelline The Falsies in black and Chanel Inimitable Intense in noir.
