Claire Danes's Icy Blue Lids: SCORE

Dane's subdued, ice-blue eyes are a refreshing twist on this old trend, and one that makes her look modern instead of from a scene in My So-Called Life. If you want to follow in her beauty steps, Garner recommends this hue for starters. "Icier blues work really well on a variety of skin tones," he says. "The trick is to use the blue as an accent color and pair it with a black smoky eye or black liner. This is the best way to play it safe when it comes to this color."

Blue eye shadow also comes in handy when you need a pick-me-up for your lids. "By putting blue shadow right about the center of the pupil you can create a mirrored effect," says Garner. "If you want to look well rested, pick a metallic blue shimmer and rim the inner eye with it for fake, wide awake eyes."

If you have a porcelain complexion like Danes, take heed to this advice from Garner: "If you have fair skin, pick a deep blue shadow to make a statement," he says. "It's great to mix two different shades together but they shouldn't be multiple lighter shades, like ocean blue and baby blue. That's where your makeup can get a little costume-like."

But remember, when in doubt, Garner says the easiest thing to do is pair a light and dark shade together topped off with some black liner. This will give your look depth and is a safe bet to pull off rocking this trend without the neon legwarmers.
