As someone who rarely wears eye makeup during the day, going full on cat eye can look like an Amy Winehouse tribute. And even if a Jeremy Scott-sized cat eye is part of your everyday makeup look, like unicorn hair and blue lipstick, dramatic winged liner becomes a talking point. When you want a little eye-lifting action without going for a full makeup moment, try this subtle winged liner situation that Miss Fame (of RuPaul's Drag Race) created for us.
Unlike a classic cat eye, the new wing is short and blunt, but it's just as lifting and elongating as the original. "Start small and build it out," says Miss Fame, who also taught us how to contour, fill in our brows, and smoke an eye. "Look continually between both eyes for a symmetrical finish." Here, the easiest cat eye for liquid liner-phobes.
Step 1: Trace The Lashline
"Use a pencil first to anchor the lash line and make a blueprint for your liquid liner," says Dam-Mikkelsen who recommends Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon in Blacquer. "It's a gel liner in a self sharpening pencil. Very smooth application and one of the blackest colors out."
Step 2: Liquify Your Line
Next trace the pencil line with a flat angled brush dipped in liquid pigment. Miss Fame loves Inglot AMC eyeliner gel #77: "The blackest gel liner I can find and the texture is so smooth and lovely. Dries matte and lasts forever." If you don't want to deal with a brush and paint pot, go for equally dark, smooth Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in Mat Black.
Step 3: Define Lashes (Optional)
Add a swipe of any mascara you like (I'm into cucumber-scented Rimmel Lift Me Up). But this isn't about lashes.
Step 4: Clean It Up
Check out your wings and make sure they're symmetrical, then for an extra-sharp line, soak a cotton swab in makeup remover and gently slide it along the wing.
