This seemingly awesome beauty procedure is all the rage these days. But before diving in lashes first, we decided to get the 411 on the ins and outs of the entire experience from a serious industry expert. Here, Tiffany Fluhme, CEO of FLUHME Beauty, answers all our questions:
What are they? Eyelash extensions are enhancements to the natural eyelashes. Typically they are applied to achieve greater volume and length to the lashes in an effort to accentuate the eyes.
What is the application process? The whole thing can take anywhere from 45 minutes for a partial set of lashes or up to two hours for a full set. Usually, the client is lying on a facial chair or massage table and will need to keep her eyes closed throughout the procedure. The lashes are applied one by one to your individual lashes with an eyelash adhesive. The service should be pain free and many say it's a relaxing experience.
How long do they last? Lash extensions last anywhere from three to four weeks.
How much do they cost? The costs vary greatly and can range from $100 to $500 for a full set and start at $50 for touch-ups.
Pros: You'll have lush, lavish lashes 24/7 without mascara! When applied correctly, the extensions perfectly enhance your eyes. Many women feel they need less makeup when they have them on.
Cons: This beautiful look definitely requires maintenance. Most clients, depending on their eyelash shedding cycle, will require touch-ups every two to four weeks. Also, some may have a sensitivity or allergic reaction to the adhesive that is used to bond the lashes. This usually requires removal, and it is difficult to predict who will react badly. If you have extremely sensitive eyes or severe allergies, I recommend a test patch of the eyelash adhesive first. It is also important not to get your lashes wet for at least 24 hours after the application.
How do you keep them looking great? In order to enhance the longevity of your eyelash extensions DO NOT pull or pick at your lashes and be very conscious of how you sleep. Sleeping on one side only and/or pressing on your pillow can contribute to premature eyelash shedding. You do have the option to wear mascara with your lashes, but the less you wear mascara the longer they will last! Avoid waterproof mascara, as it is very difficult to remove, and extreme heat, humidity, and excessive exposure to water.
The verdict? Although eyelash extensions are not for everyone, I absolutely recommend giving them a try. I have heard women say that they would never be caught without them! When applied correctly they are effortless and glamorousperfect for a special event or long beach vacation where you'll want to wear minimal makeup. All in all, eyelash extensions are a wonderful addition to the beauty industry.
