Beauty Cabinet Confidential: Frederique van der Wal

Frederique's vanity is lined with iconic must-have items: Face Stockholm Essential C Energizing Serum, Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre, Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, Nivea Cold Cream, Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer, Guerlaine Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing compact, and a Stila eye shadow compact to name a few.

Real Beauty:What are some of your absolute daily beauty rituals?

Frederique van der Wal: "I always clean my face before bed. Always. I use Nivea Cold Cream to cleanse and then rinse with cold water to help close up my pores. And, I never ever forget to moisturize. I usually use a heavier cream, like Embryolisse, before bed."

RB: What about diet? Anything you do or don't do?

FVDW: I don't really diet and I don't eat a lot of fried food or processed food.

RB: You have so many skin products to choose from, which ones are your favorite?

FVDW: "Your skin gets used to things, so I switch between my cleansing and moisturizing products quite often. This doesn't happen with makeup, so I stick to the ones I love - the ones I've been using for years."

RB: What if you're running late? What products do you typically reach for before dashing out the door?

FVDW: Skin should look fresh, that's why I always remember to moisturize so my skin looks healthy and in the summer I add an SPF to my routine. Sometimes I'll forget mascara or blush, but I will never forget eyeliner - it helps me look wide awake even if I'm not.

RB: We noticed that you have tons of different shampoos and conditioners in your shower. What's your typical hair routine?

FVDW: Don't wash your hair everyday, it's not healthy. Like your skin, your hair gets used to the same shampoo and conditioner, so I switch it up basically every time I wash.

RB: Can we take a peek inside your makeup bag?

FVDW: Of course! I've got all my essentials: Shu Uemera Eye Lash Curler, Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, a MAC nude lipstick [editor's note: she's had this forever and the name tag is long gone!], bronzer, and a Stila eye liner.

RB: Does your daughter ever borrow any of your makeup or skin products?

FVDW: "No, she's 10! I mean, I let her use some lip gloss sometimes if we're going to a fashion thing, but that's it."

RB: We love your bracelet! Where is it from?

FVDW:The dutch jewelry designer, Bibi van der Velden, gave this to me to wear. Its a symbol of "good gold." The production of gold jewelery has been linked to widespread social injustice and environmental damage. I firmly believe in corporate social sustainability - in my company, Frederique's Choice, and now by making a statement wearing this bracelet.

RB: We noticed that you have flowers all over your house. Are they from your flower company and can you tell us a little bit about Frederique's Choice?

FVDW: I'm Dutch and flowers are a very important part of our lifestyle. I read recently that flowers can have a positive effect on your mood, so I keep them everywhere. The Frederique’s Choice lily was named after me, which inspired me to work with the Discovery Channel to create a show that documented the growth and transport of flowers around the world. In the end, I began my own flower company to share my passion and start a new focus in my life.
