Celebrity Beauty Awards: The 100 Best and Worst Looks of 2011
For all of the breath-taking red carpet beauty moments in 2011, there were equal amounts of what-was-she-thinking makeup and hair flops.
By Leah Melby and Lauren Levinson
Best Overall Beauty: Kate Middleton
Worst False Lower Lashes: Zooey Deschanel
Zooey Deschanel's perfectly symmetrical, spidery fringe is creeping us out! The doll-like look should start and stop with her flawless, porcelain skin.
Best Sister Duo: Dakota and Elle Fanning
Worst Haircut: Rose Byrne
When you're as gorgeous as Rose Byrne, it's hard to imagine anything would look bad. While the Bridesmaids star is still stunning, we nearly cried when she made the ill-decision to cut some serious fringe.
Best Daredevil: Nicki Minaj
Worst Orange Lipstick: Petra Nemcova
Pops of bright lipstick is a beauty trend that won't be loosing steam anytime soon. Still, Petra Nemcova makes a misstep, picking a color that looks pure orange rather than a coral or tangeriney-red.
Best Hipster Style: Lake Bell
Worst Gray: Penelope Cruz
A gorgeous Penelope Cruz takes a walk on the gray side, showing a salt-and-pepper look on the set of her latest movie. Gray and white hair can be beautiful, but only if it's super hydrated.
Best Chameleon: Scarlett Johansson
Worst Bowl Cut: Mena Suvari
There's something about Mena Suvari's glossy bowl cut that doesn't quite work. Perfectly-in-place strands feel more right for long locks; we would've liked to see this length with loose waves or curls.
Best Rockabilly Stye: Camilla Belle
Worst Faux Bob: Lauren Conrad
A little bit of hairstylist magic is responsible for making Lauren Conrad's hair look shorter than it actually is. We love beauty tricks, but would've preferred a uniform length.
Best Gothic Beauty: Dita Von Teese
Worst Sunglasses at Night: Madonna
Just because '80s crooners wear their sunnies at night doesn't mean it's approved for the general style-population. Madonna's ruby pair detract from her otherwise gorgeous hair and makeup.
Best Cat Eyes: Olivia Wilde
Worst Train Wreck: Lindsay Lohan
The overly processed platinum hair, the costume-y makeup. We're speechless.
Best Retro Makeup: Rose McGowan
Worst Beauty Mark: Lady Gaga
We can let the thick eyebrows pass, and we're even okay with the aqua pageboy. But that super-strong, perfectly round beauty mark? No can do, Gaga.
Best Natural Beauty: Michelle Williams
Worst Hair Flip: Lake Bell
The feathered Farah Fawcett look still has legs, but it needs more volume than just a few pieces. Lake Bell's bangs look more like forehead-curtains than anything else, a style we're not so crazy about.
Best Comeback: Britney Spears
Worst Dolly Parton Influence: Kelly Osbourne
Why does Kelly Osbourne look more like a southern Toddlers & Tiaras star than her normal, spunky Brit-self? The heavy lashes and coiffed 'do might work on someone older (or with a drawl) but they feel all wrong on her.
Best Use of Highlighter: Kerry Washington
Worst Matte Lips: Kourtney Kardashian
The most stylish of the Kardashian klan, Kourtney, makes a rare beauty mistake. Her nude lips are on-trend, but a matte lipstick, rather than a high-shine gloss, makes it look like someone just covered her pout with foundation. Not cute!
Best Bum: Jessica Biel
Worst Genie 'Do: Katy Perry
Katy Perry has fun with her hair and makeup, yes. But the popstar doesn't always nail it. Here, this high, overly extension'ed pony looks way too gimmicky.
Best Nude Lip: Kate Winslet
Worst Falsies: Katerina Graham
Vampire Diaries actress Katerina Graham steps out with false eyelashes that would only pass muster on Halloween. They don't look like they were sized properly for her eyes, and that length makes sure they're not fooling anybody.
Best Dewy Skin: Jennifer Lopez
Worst Redhead: Julianne Hough
Some girls just work as blondes. Such is the case with Julianne Hough, who loses some of her sparkle when stepping out with light auburn locks earlier this year.
Best Beauty For Her Age: Demi Moore
Worst Ponytail: Julie Bowen
We love the casual, all-American feel of a ponytail at high-style events. With brittle-looking strands and a severe chop-line, Modern Family matriarch Julie Bowen doesn't do the look justice.
Best Cheekbones: Angelina Jolie
Worst Lip Gloss: Jessica Szohr
What is that color exactly? Jessica Szohr's icy plum/pink/nude gloss doesn't flatter her complexion. And it actually makes her look like she's in the early stages of hypothermia.
Best Hair Ever: Jennifer Anniston
Worst Halo Effect: Hilary Swank
With her hair brushed back, it's shockingly obvious how badly Hilary Swank needs to see her colorist. The shade-difference, probably unnoticeable when her hair is down normally, looks bizarrely striking like this.
Best Trademark: Gwen Stefani
Worst Shapewear: Jennifer Love Hewitt
Okay, okaywe know Jennifer Love Hewitt is always husband-hunting, but the cobalt blue bustier on outside of her clothes is just crossing the desperate line.
Best Deep Side Part: Ashley Greene
Worst Hat: Hayden Panettiere
Even a pretty grin won't get Hayden Panettiere out of this beauty violation. Winter hats can look great, but the style of this tight, knitted cap doesn't work on her pixie cut.
Best Braided Updo: Freida Pinto
Worst Bronze: Ashley Tisdale
Did her High School education teach her absolutely nothing? Ashley Tisdale picks a bronzer several shades too dark, and looks like she dived in a vat full of it!
Best Bling: Carrie Underwood
Worst Let-Down: Blake Lively
From the moment Blake Lively entered our lives, we've been taught to expect great things from that head of hair of hers. Compared to the gorgeous curls and lush strands we've been taught to expect, this frizzy, lank look just won't cut it.
Best Eyebrows: Amanda Peet
Worst Side-Mullet: Alicia Keys
Songbird Alicia Keys puts a twist on the classic mullet, keeping it all business on the right, and party on the left. We think she's gorgeous both ways, but sorry, ladyyou need to choose.
Best Curves: Christina Hendricks
Worst Short Hair: Abbie Cornish
Here's hoping that Abbie Cornish's cropped 'do was for a movie role. The short look is absolutely cringe-worthy on her round face, and gentle side bangs would've flattered her wider forehead.
Best Voluminous Hair: Annalynne McCord
Worst Big Hair: Jennifer Lopez
Big might be in when it comes to hair, but we have a feeling no one was talking about this big. Jennifer Lopez looks like she's imitating a lion with these combed-out, fluffed-up curls. Rawr!
Best Nail Art: Katy Perry
Worst Red Lips: Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart, known for her laid back, muss-free style, should know better than to try too hard. Red lipstick, one of our favorite fall trends, looks overdone and dowdy on her.
Best Cute Complexion: Rashida Jones
Worst Bangs: Zoë Kravitz
Rockstar progeny Zoë Kravitz (dad is super-stud Lenny) is a gorgeous gal with the modeling stints to prove it. That said, we can't figure out why she'd throw her lovely visage off-kilter with these scraggly chopped bangs.
Best Blunt Bangs: Leighton Meester
Worst Updo: January Jones
If January Jones was dressing for a sci-fi convention, we might have let this one slide. But the severe front of this classic French twist left her looking half-shaved at the Unknown premiere. What would Betty Draper say!?
Best Redhead: Emma Stone
Worst Facial Tattoo: Shenae Grimes
There's lots of ways to make beauty edgy: a sculpted 'do, severe eyeliner, or a neon lipstick. Facial tattoos? Not one of them. Guilty-as-charged, Shenae Grimes.
Best Parisian Babe: Clémence Poésy
Worst Braid: Rihanna
We love the Rapunzel feel of Rihanna's ultra-long, wrap-around braid. It's romantic and on-trend, but absolutely wrong for her formal dress and event. Pair it with a light cotton frock but a ball gown? Come on, Ri Ri.
Best Big Hair Change: Dianna Agron
Worst Lower Lash Mascara: Peaches Geldof
Mascara on the lower lashes can create flirty, doll-eyed beauties, but British socialite Peaches Geldof didn't quite nail the look. A thick and clumpy application leaves them looking stumpy and brittle, two things you never want your makeup to do.
Best Eyelashes: Kim Kardashian
Worst Eye Shadow: Heidi Klum
Heidi Klum loves to dress up, this we know, but eccentric makeup doesn't always work. The supermodel, mom, and mogul had a heavy-hand with the blue shadow at a photo exhibit, resulting in an oddly extraterrestrial look.
Best Eye Shadow: Emma Watson
Worst Concealer: Christina Applegate
Exhausted Hollywood'ers (and their makeup artists) have to reach for concealers to hide late nights on set, but it's Christina Applegate's super bright circles that have us scratching our head. The reverse raccoon looknot sexy.
Best Shiny Hair: Gwyneth Paltrow
Worst Eye Makeup: Sienna Miller
After seeing a gothed-out Sienna Miller, it's suddenly clear why the sunny actress chooses boho beauty so much of the time. Too much dark shadow makes her look ghostly (and blood-thirsty!).
Best Poppy Lipstick: Liv Tyler
Worst Retro Hair: Fergie
Without a hair out of place, Fergie's '50s-style retro bob is technically perfect. The look would work for a costume party, but in real life, the style ages the pop star and makes her look more like June Cleaver than a fist-pumping Black Eyed Pea.
Best Cleavage: Pippa Middleton
Worst Glitter: Ke$ha
The rule of thumb with glitter: If you're hell-bent on using it, do so sparingly. Ke$sha flaunts all beauty conventions (no newsflash there) with a shiny gold splatter we'd rather not see repeated.
Best Sultry, Smoky Eyes: Lea Michele
Worst Shine Control: Angelina Jolie
Even screen goddesses can make some makeup missteps. It's hard finding fault with Angelina's drop-dead gorgeous genes, but we're calling the shine police on this one! A little bit of powder or off-screen blotting papers would make her look 100% flawless (rather than just 99.9).
Best Boho Hairstyle: Blake Lively
Worst Androgynous: Chloë Sevigny
Scenester Chloë Sevigny is an original and always dresses for herself (something we love!). The androgynous look is big this year, yeah, but the bow tie and slicked back hair make her seem leering and greasy, not fashionable.
Best Winged Eyeliner: Heather Morris
Worst Spray Tan: Jane Krakowski
If we had a nickel for every celeb who OD'ed on DHA Jane Krakowski took it a few steps past Cali-bronzed at this year's Emmys, stepping out in a uniform orangey shade that was too unnatural to pass beauty muster.
Best Bronze: Katie Holmes
Worst Nude Lips: Nicole Richie
Even if hippies don't really wear lipstick, Nicole Richie's pucker would have benefited from a hint of color. Her nude lips blend in with her complexion, and all the tans and purples start to make everything look a little sickly gray.
Best Gams: Julianne Hough
Worst Eyebrows: Juliette Lewis
Actress and rocker Juliette Lewis's eyebrows look all bent out of shape. The arch has an aggressive angle that seems like a tweezing mistake, and we're wondering why some trusty makeup artist couldn't have penciled a little somethin' somethin' to get a fiercer, more complete look.
Best Blonde: Kristen Bell
Worst Gel: Claire Danes
Fashion week's runways are proof that the slick-back look is big. In real life, Claire Danes rocked so much gel on her crown that it feels dirty, not chic.
Best Toned Arms: Felicity Huffman
Worst Extensions: Vanessa Hudgens
We loved Vanessa Hudgens's pixie cut, required for an upcoming movie. Shoulder-grazing extensions let her go longer for a day, but the glossy pieces look too much like a full-on wig.
Best Pixie Cut: Halle Berry
Worst Ombré: Drew Barrymore
While we've applauded Miss Barrymore in the past for being a champion of the ombré hair trend, we're calling this one a foul. The gradiation between her strands' blonde and brown is so harsh, it looks a little like a clown wig.
Best Porcelain Skin: Anne Hathaway
Worst Bedhead: Alexa Chung
Alexa Chung has made her it girl rep with a barebones beauty regime. While the former model can pull off her fuss-free look, this messy mop looks like it could have used some Q.T. with a comb.
Best Classic Beauty: Taylor Swift
Worst Brunette: Katie Cassidy
Sure, every girl needs a change now and then, but we're strongly suggesting Katie Cassidy go back to her natural blonde. The deep chocolate hue makes her look almost unrecognizableand not in a good way.
Best Easy 'Do: Whitney Port
Worst Part: Nicole Kidman
Did the Aussie star forget to do a mirror-check before stepping onto the red carpet? Nicole Kidman's pretty flawless, per usual, until you notice that her part seems to be oddly askew.
Best Hot-Mama Glow: Beyoncé
Worst Dark Circles: Leighton Meester
Deep-set eyes can often be blamed for tired-looking shadows, but these exhausted rings just aren't working for Leighton Meester. Does our favorite Gossip Girl need more beauty sleep?
Best Breakout Starlet: Sarah Hyland
Move over Selena Gomez, there's a new young, It girl in Hollywood. The Modern Family actress has been getting gold stars on the red carpet. We love how she makes her doll eyes pop by highlighting the inner corners of her peepers with white shimmer.
Worst Roots: Elizabeth Banks
If your roots show through under your strands, not just at the part, you know you're in trouble. Elizabeth Banks might want to schedule an appointment with her colorist, stat.
Best Abs: Lady Gaga
Worst Eyelashes: Kate Hudson
One of the perils of being a blonde? Fair lashes. A red carpet vet, Kate Hudson usually defines her eyes with mascara and shadow for a super glam look. Here, ignored eyelashes make her look like a teen who ought to be home in bed.
