Sheer clothing has been allover the runways and the red carpet, and we don't think it's going anywhere just because fall is setting in. Though we certainly are not planning on taking it as far as Miss Erin Wasson over here, we are digging ensembles with tasteful sheer accents and hints of skin. So we enlisted the help of Maidenform Fashion Director, Norah Alberto, to get the scoop on how to feel confident wearing this high-fashion peek-a-boo trend without looking tacky.
Only One Item at a Time: Don't go overboard with this one! "Never wear two pieces of sheer clothing at the same time," says Alberto. "A blouse in a neutral color is one of the easiest ways to wear this look."
Layer if Wearing Sheer at Work: While it may seem like this is a trend that can't be worn in the office, there are ways to make it look professional. Try a solid nude tank or camisole underneath a sheer top and paired with a tailored blazer. Or if you're going for a bolder look, try a color or patterned long sleeve see-through shirt and a solid slim pant. "Depending on the print and color, I still like a solid, tailored tank, but you can play with color here," says Alberto. Also be sure to keep accessories to a minimumlet the sheer piece make the statement.
Play with Sheer Accents for Date Night: "Sheer can look amazing as an accent to a little black dress," Alberto explains. Try a dress with sheer panels or simple sheer accents and wear with a flesh toned slip. If you'd prefer to wear jeans and heels on your night out, try a sheer blouse, but amp up the sexiness with a textured cami underneath, like lace!
When in Doubt, Accentuate the Top Half of Your Body: If you're unsure how you want to rock the sheer trend, pick a piece of clothing that accentuates the top half of your body. "The neck and shoulder areas are safe to reveal, while still giving off a hint of sexy," Alberto explains. Another chic option? Matching your tank under the sheer blouse to your pantsit will create an elongated look.
Never Pair a Sheer Blouse with Just a Bra: This one is better left for the models, as Alberto says! "Wearing simply a bra with a sheer top just doesn't translate the same way in everyday life," she explains. "Before you leave the house, take a long look in the mirrorespecially since, with the sheer trend, everyone will be seeing a lot of you!"
