Real Beauty: Do you wear any kind of makeup in the pool?
Natalie Coughlin: I generally don't bother with it when I swim. Instead, I wear Vertra sunscreen, which is an ultra water-resistant sunscreen to protect my skin.
RB: What about for a workout at the gym?
NC: Nope, but I do make sure I look presentable with groomed eyebrows or a nice chignon.
RB: Are there any surprising side-effects of spending so much time in a chlorinated pool?
NC: My skin gets very dry so I always use a rich lotion after I swim. But mostly, it's my hair that goes through all the trauma! Anytime I get in the pool, I make sure to wash and condition it, and I brush the conditioner through my hair with a wide-toothed comb. After rinsing, I'll use a leave-in treatment like Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Silky Moisture Whip. At least once a week I use a moisture-mask or deep-conditioning treatment, like Pantene Damage Repair Ampoules.
RB: As a pro athlete, you spend a lot of your time in a swimsuit or workout duds. When youre just running errands or hanging out with friends, do you find yourself dressing up a little since you dont normally get to?
NC: I love to dress up and play with my hair and makeup since I don't get the opportunity that often. If I have plans with friends or if Im going out to dinner with my husband, I like to blow-out my hair and do a smoky-eye. I definitely look forward to dressing up a bit, toolike a nice dress or a fun skirt and heels.
RB: Are there any beauty products youve discovered abroad that you stock up on when traveling?
NC: I love Lucas' Papaw Ointment. You can use it for all sorts of stuff from lip balm to cuticle cream to ointment. Whenever I'm in Australia I stock up!
RB: Have you noticed anything different about the way women around the world relate to beauty and fashion?
NC: I've definitely noticed that shoes in Europe are more functional than a lot of shoes that I have found in the States. Not only are they beautiful, but they are made for women who have to walk miles and miles.
