Want to lose more weight during your winter walk? Consider walking with specialized walking poles — an exercise known as Nordic Walking. Nordic Walking burns up to 40 percent more calories than normal walking. Your arms, shoulders, neck, chest, and back muscles are all stretched and relaxed with this exercise, and the addition of walking poles provides extra stability and balance on slippery or uneven surfaces.

Here's how to do it: Keeping your shoulders relaxed, hold the walking poles close to your body and behind you at all times. While stepping forward with one foot, swing the opposite arm forward to waist level, allowing the pole to strike the ground at the same time as your foot. For example, when stepping forward with your right foot, swing your left arm and bring your walking pole attached to that arm forward. When switching feet, swing the pole that is in front of you as far back as you can and fully extend your arm behind you. Repeat with each step.
