1. Get rid of bad breath - for good.

Tired of wasting money on mouthwashes that barely mask garlic breath? Now it's easier to find hope in a bottle. Research from the Medical University of Bahrain suggests that mouthwashes with ingredients like chlorhexidine, zinc, and chlorine dioxide will reduce odor. Two that make the grade: ProFresh and Tom's of Maine Natural Cleansing Mouthwash.

2. Turn off the tube.

If you've been glued to the TV lately, it might mean you're in a funk. Unhappy people watch 20 percent more television than self-described happy people, according to a new study from the University of Maryland. Though TV may offer an easy escape from life's grim realities, clinging to the remote can leave you feeling...well, remote. So lay it down and try two activities linked with happy folk in the study: reading and socializing.

3. Try a new headache-helper.

The most common way to treat a headache is to pop a pain reliever. But acupuncture is a better way, say Duke University researchers, who've found that 62 percent of patients going under the needle find relief, compared with 45 percent of those taking medication. "[Acupuncture] is a method for releasing your body's own natural painkillers," says lead researcher Tong Joo Gan, M.D. While being covered in pinpricks may sound scary, it doesn't hurt, says Gan: "Patients describe a numbing, tingling sensation." To find a licensed acupuncturist near you, visit aaaomonline.org.

4. Beat your "fat genes."

No more blaming your waistline on your genes (sorry): You can overcome a predisposition to obesity with regular activity - about three to four hours' worth a day, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine. It's not as hard as it sounds; even walking, gardening, and cleaning the house can help you can escape Aunt Fay's apple shape.
