Real Beauty: What exactly does a Boogie Box class entail? What parts of the body will it work?
Dede Barbanti: Boogie Box (BBX) is a one-hour strength and cardio class that requires no equipment. Everything is done using the technique of applied-muscle resistance (AMR) and works every single part of your body: Arms, legs, back, shoulders, glutes, and most importantly, core. AMR is when you create tension in your muscles (which act as weights), while executing movements (which act as resistance). (Think about when someone tells you to "make a muscle"that tension that you feel is AMR.) By using applied muscle resistance and exaggerated, overemphasized movements that don't keep you confined in a repetitive lateral pattern, you are able to continually push your body further, avoid those dreaded plateaus, burn more calories, and sculpt lean muscle.
RB: What kind of fitness routines does it draw from?
DB: It is an innovative combination of sports-endurance drills, martial arts, hip hop dance, and plyometric movements all executed while using the technique of AMR.
RB: How long is the class, and how many calories can the average woman expect to burn?
DB: It's one hour (there's a short break at the half-hour mark). It has been university tested (twice) to burn up to 1100 calories an hour. Not to mention, the "after-burn" is great too. You will continue to burn calories up to 24 hours after a Boogie Box workout!
RB: What kind of fitness levels is it best for? Are there any types of women who should stray away from it?
DB: Anyone can do BBX! The class can be easily adapted for any fitness level. However, I do not recommend it for pregnant women or those with a history of multiple knee or shoulder surgeries.
