It was just two summers ago that we discovered coconut water. The beverage is pretty prevalent on the New York City streets, so much that in some neighborhoods, they'll crack a whole coconut open for you and stick a straw in it. We'll admit that it's an acquired tasteit has the consistency of water, but feels a little thicker going down, and is a bit sweet and creamy.
Once we actually read the label on the bottle (most coconut water brands pack their product in Tetra Paks) we were floored to see how good the drink actually was for our bodies. Check out a few stats below:
1. It's fat-free and cholesterol-free, plus there's no added sugar.
2. It has more potassium than two bananas and fifteen times as much as a sports drink. (Replenishing your potassium level is key when exercising.)
3. It's packed with electrolytes (5 to be specific), and hydrates faster than water.
Tell us: Would you try out this all-natural beverage, or will you stay with regular sports drinks like Gatorade?
Zico, pictured here, is available in Target stores nationwide. Boston Celtics player Kevin Garnett recently signed on to endorse the brand, calling coconut water his "secret weapon."
