What is a "calling" or a "soul's purpose?" I have heard that each of us has a calling. What is it exactly and how do we know if we have one?
We are all given unique gifts and talents to share with the world. The awareness of these talents can be discovered through ease or adversity. Some of us evolve into these naturally and others are prompted out of necessity. Both require a leap of faith. If we look at our lives with loving interest, we will be amazed at how many signs and clues we are given along the way. These moments are fueled by a desire from within and must be pursued with a strong belief in ourselves.
Here are some tools to hear one's calling:
Clearing the Commotion
A calling requires one to truly listen. This can be challenging in a world that is noisy and in a society where the literal, analytical and tangible prevail. A calling can be easily dismissed, ignored or repressed. A simple pause, a moment of silence, a dream or a meditation can all clear the way to inspiration.
Active Listening
Just as one can learn to read between the lines, it is also important to listen in this way. A particular sentence or word will light up when we hear it, or we are unequivocally drawn to a particular place or person. We get a certain feeling and know that it is special, that we have been called. When you are drawn to something it is important to ask "why". "Why" stimulates contemplation and self-awareness.
Coincidence or Synchronicity
The choice is ours. It is easy to dismiss something as coincidence but much more life-giving to see it as synchronistic. Do you allow yourself to receive the loving support from the universe or do you diminish the power and think that it's just a coincidence.
Seeing Problems as Opportunities
When we look at our problems as opportunities, life becomes much more interesting. This takes tremendous awareness, trust and conviction. It is much more common to look at life's struggles with resistance and avoidance than to fully embrace them as real prospects for growth. When one is focused on their soul's calling, every situation contains the opportunity to evolve.
Embracing Our Greatness
Many of us have been taught or have learned self-consciousness. Sometimes humility, a beautiful quality, is confused with low self worth. This must be overcome and released. We must embrace our greatness to truly hear our calling. Know that within each of us there is a light. And that light is being called forth to shine bright, to unite with others and share in our greatness and joy. That is one's calling. That is the miracle of life.
