What should I be eating to help fend off heart disease?
The very same foods that are high in fiber are very heart-healthy as well. Fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, and whole grains top the list. Oatmeal is considered heart-healthy due to its high water-soluble fiber content.
You can make something heart-healthy by limiting the amount of fats and oils in your recipe. For example, use two egg whites in place of one whole egg to bring down the cholesterol level of the meal, and cut way back on salt to decrease your sodium intake.
Gayl Canfield, RD is the Nutrition Educator at the Pritikin Longevity Center where guests learn how to size up every food label imaginable and leave Dr. Canfield's workshops feeling, "I can do this!" Pritikins residential program is based on daily exercise and natural, whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seafood, and limited lean meat.
