What was the inspiration for the hairstyles in the film?
"We knew we would be shooting in the Bahamas eventually, so all the styles had to be easy and transitional. Whether it was their natural hair or a weave, we straightened it out for filming and kept it curly when in the islands."
What were some products used to fight the humidity while on location?
"We loved the Mixed Chicks products because they were perfect for battling the humidity. The leave-in conditioner attracts moisture to the hair so it isnt frizzy. We used this for Sharon Leal, along with the Mixed Chicks shampoo and conditioner, because the product doesn't weigh the curls down. Janet Jackson also really loved the Paul Mitchell Hair Sculpting Lotion to give her style texture and hold."
What was your flatiron of choice when you did straighten their hair?
"HairArt and the FHI Flat Iron were the two we used on set. For Leal, we blow-dried her hair with a round brush and then flat-ironed it for optimal body. Tasha Smith had longer hair for this film, and it also had great body once we straightened it."
What are the "superhero" products you love?
"I often use the Kérastase products, and I love Redken Smooth Down Shampoo and Conditioner. I gave some to the girls so they could wash their hair with it on their off days. Leave-in conditioner is also a must to keep hair manageable and frizz-free."
