laura after keratin treatment

Those of us who struggle to control frizz know that heat and humidity can wreak havoc on the perfect hairstyle faster than you can say "poolside piña colada." With that in mind, and as part of our laid-back summer beauty guide, we set out to give naturally curl-endowed Laura a frizz-free hair makeover that she wouldn't have to spend any time or effort on all summer long. The perfect solution to Laura's fight to end frizz? A Brazilian Blowout treatment.

"It's a conditioning treatment," said Laura's stylist, Stacy of Butterfly Studio Salon in New York City. "This means it doesn't break down the shaft of the hair to make it straighter. It's actually a really great treatment for damaged hair; the more porous your hair is, the more processed and dried out it is, the better it works." Unlike other Japanese or Brazilian straightening treatments, the Brazilian Blowout doesn't completely straighten your hair; it just softens whatever curl or wave you have naturally. So, you can let it air-dry for soft, romantic waves, or you can blow it dry in mere minutes for a stick-straight style.

Stacy started out by washing Laura's hair three times with a clarifying shampoo to get it squeaky-clean. "We have to get hair super-clean so that the product will penetrate fully and the hair will absorb all of the treatment," Stacy said. Then, she applied the treatment, blew her hair dry, and used a flatiron to seal in the solution.

"I absolutely love it — this looks unbelievable!" Laura said of her new, pin-straight look. "And you don't have to change your lifestyle at all," said Stacy. "You can shampoo your hair as soon as the next day!" (Although she cautions that you should use sulfate-free hair products, as "sulfates will make it wash out sooner.")

Although it may be a bit pricey — a Brazilian Blowout typically starts out at $350 (depending on length and thickness) — the treatment lasts for 12 weeks, gradually washing out, so you really can go all summer long with an incredibly low-maintenance, fantastically frizz-free hairstyle. You: 1. Humidity: 0.
