Bouffants are back, and possibly better (and bigger) than ever. Below, Anthony-Joseph Hernandez, senior stylist and educator at Ryan Darius Salon in New York City tells you how to pull one off without looking like a Jersey Shore cast member.
Snooki's Sky-High Bump: FAIL
"Crazy hair might work on the runway (or in this case increasing Snooki's height), but the everyday girl needs to tone it down," says Hernandez. "A little height goes a long way." Another tip from Hernandez: Work with your face shape to determine the form of your boffant. If your face is round make your hair sleek on the sides to thin it out. For angular faces make your updo even all over and if your face is long, choose a style that isn't too high. "Don't forget to double check your work," Hernandez says. "Look at the sides and the back after you tease it to make sure you've smoothed everything over."
Rihanna's Face-Framing Bouffant: SCORE
Aside from working with her face shape and letting the front pieces of her hair frame the look, Hernandez says this style works because it's not weighed down with product. "You want the hair to stay up," he says.
To get an easy bouffant style at home, try these tips from Hernandez below:
Start out by appling a volumizing spray on damp hair (we like Alterna Bamboo Volume Plumping Strand Expand, $23; beauty-mart.com), then blow-dry for volume. This will create a base for the style.
Set hair with hot rollers for additional body and texture. Start with the crown of your head and go all the way back to the nape, moving to the front sides and then the back. Spray lightly with a flexible hold hairspray and let cool.
Section the hair front to back and tease everything only at the roots. The higher you tease, the bigger your hair will be.
Once teased you can try a number of styles. Smooth the unteased hair over and secure it into a ponytail or half-up style. Pay attention to the shape you create when pulling it back. From the ponytail you can put your hair into a loose bun or French twist using bobby pins. Top off with hairspray.
