There's just something about the cooler months that gets us in the mood for a deeper, more dramatic hair color. And we're not the only ones craving a darker shade: Professional colorists say they always notice an increase in the number of clients switching over to the dark side when autumn rolls around. "Without a doubt there is a shift to richer shades in the fall and winter months," says Marcy Cona, Clairol Creative Director of Color and Style. Plus, the sun is less aggressive this time of year so it's easier to maintain a dark color, says Naomi Knights, colorist at Ion Studio in New York City. So whether you've been highlighting your hair for years and are ready to embrace your natural hue, or you just want to kick your brown up a notch, here are the tips you need to pull it off.
Experiment with a Temporary Formula
If you're going the DIY route, brown is the most mistake-proof hue to do (as long as you're not starting out with naturally very blonde hair). But, if you're still apprehensive about going darker, pick a semi- or demi-permanent formula like Clairol Natural Instincts. "It's low-commitment since the color only lasts through 28 shampoos," says Cona. If you like the shade, wait until it fades and then apply a permanent version.
