The Costumes of Anna Karenina

Keira Knightley stars in the new film version of Tolstoy's tragic love story dripping in jewels and draped in drool-inducing gowns. We caught up with costume designer, Jacqueline Durran (who also worked with Knightley and director Joe Wright in Atonement and Pride and Prejudice), to get the behind-the-scenes sartorial scoop.

RB: Tell us about all the fabulous Chanel jewelry you used in the film.

JD: In early discussions with Joe and Keira, we decided that Anna would always being wearing real jewelry, and we got into discussion with Chanel about having a lot of diamonds and fine jewelry in the movie. It's quite a tricky thing to arrange sometimes, but Chanel was extremely happy to help and I went to Paris chose items that were Baroque or had a kind of timeless elegance—filigree diamonds and pearls and things like that.

It's just astounding that there's this woman who's so beautiful and she's got so many diamonds around her neck. It was also part of the process of getting dressed to be Anna in the morning. We would bring in the jewelry on a big tray and Keira would go through and decide what Anna was going to wear that day in a way that perhaps Anna would do. This is a woman who would have astounding jewelry and I think there's something about it being real that's good for the picture. The other thing is, diamonds—that kind of jewelry—have a kind of energy. I don't know why, it's just one of those things about jewels, I suppose.
