Use Less Hot Water

Even if shorter showers aren't in your immediate future (that's where your "me" time is after all!) you can still be an eco-beauty by using less hot water. "Over 90 percent of the energy footprint of a bottle of shampoo is actually from the water in your shower," says Global Sustainability Director for P&G Beauty & Grooming Jenny Rushmore. Use less hot water by either cutting your shower time (even a minute or two makes a difference), or install a low-flow showerhead, which will cut back on your water flow.

Plus, find out why using less hot water can be better for your skin.

Multitask

It's easier to spend less time in the bathroom than you think. Rushmore recommends using double-duty beauty products, like a 2-in-1 shampoo or a razor with built-in shaving gel (she recommends Gillette Venus Breeze 2-in-1 Shave + Gel). Depending on how old your showerhead is, every minute you cut in the shower will save 2.5 gallons of water – so every little bit helps.

Let Your Hair Air-Dry

Not only is it good for the environment, it's also good for your hair. If you can, let your hair air-dry for a half hour before using your styling tools to cut back on both heat damage and energy.

Recycle Your Products

You recycle soda cans and plastic water bottles, so why not recycle your plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles too? "A lot of people recycle what's in their kitchen, the bathroom is often forgotten," says Rushmore. In fact — only 22 percent of the country recycle the products in their bathroom. Rushmore recommends checking with your local recycling company to see what can be recycled in your area. Most commonly, No. 1 and No. 2 coded plastics can be reused – which includes shampoo brands like Pantene Pro-V, Head & Shoulders, and Herbal Essences. Just remember to take the caps off before you toss — these are made with a different type of plastic and require separate recycling.

Buy in Bulk

Reduce the amount of packaging you use by purchasing larger bottles. Less packaging is used to make these, which significantly cuts back on waste.

Look at the Packaging

If possible, buy products made from renewable or recyclable materials (it will tell if you if it is on the package label). Rushmore says those bottles are made with materials that naturally grow at the rate we use them, which helps to avoid depleting the Earth's natural resources. Some brands, like CoverGirl's new NatureLuxe line are using resources like renewable sugarcane to make plastic instead of oil, which is how plastic is usually made.
